From Charlotte Street

We live on Charlotte Street. We live in the city. We love our neighborhood. We love our boys. Our house is usually a wild mess; full of wrestling children and flying footballs. We are so far from perfect and so thankful that we don't have to be because we serve a God was and is perfect for us.

Bram Mac 5 Months

Happy 5 Month Birthday Sweet Bram

Stats:
I have no idea what his height and weight are this month because we don't go to the doctor again until 6 months! There is no denying that his rolls are getting bigger and his clothes are getting tighter. :)

Skills:
*Rolling to his side
*sucking his thumb (I think that's a skill because he can self-soothe, I might regret this "skill" when I get his orthodontist bill in 10 years!)
*babbling
*Making others around him smile!
*sleeping most nights until about 4am, eats and then back bed until 6ish

Struggles:
*figuring out wake times between naps
*Starting to get upset about being in the carseat

Dear Bram,
We are so thankful to celebrate your first holiday season! You bring us so much joy. Your first thanksgiving was great. You got to travel to Manhattan and spend time with all your extended family (a tradition that has been around for years and years), and you got to go to papa Mike's house. You were so adorable playing with your cousins and big brother. My favorite thing you are doing right now is laughing! I love to hear your laugh. Sometime we spend fifteen minutes or more just laughing at each other. You are such a joy. I praise the Lord for you.
Love,
Mommy

Bram Mac 4 Months

Bram Mac

Happy 4 Month Birthday Bram!

Stats:
Weight = 16. 15oz lbs (90%tile), two weeks before he went to Dr and was 17.1 lbs so he lost a little weight when he was sick (I don't think losing a few ounces is a big deal for this guy)
Height  = 25 1/2 (75%tile)
Head Circumference =  16 1/2 (25%)

Skills:
*Bram is getting really good at pulling his legs up under him while on his belly
*laughing and cooing
*babbling to mommy, daddy, and brother
*great head control
*sits up with mommy's help (pretty far from doing it on his own)
*can lay him down for nap while he is still asleep in his own crib, sleeps for about 45 mins at each nap

Struggles:
*Still eats two or three times at night, but I can't complain because it only takes about 10 mins and he is back to bed!
*I think he might be starting to teeth early. Titus had theeth by four months, and poor Bram seems like his are hurting. He is drooling and chewing on everything!

Sweet Bram,
You are growing so fast! You are not my little newborn anymore. I love getting to spend so much time with you. It makes my heart so happy when you giggle or smile at me. When big brother takes his afternoon nap we usually get at least an hour of time just me and you before your nap. I cherish that time. It's special to have a few moments to just get to know you and focus all my attention on you. I love what a cuddle bug you are. Your eyes light up when you see your big brother! I can't wait to watch you two play together. You and daddy love to just look at each other and smile. Those are special moments. We love you sweet Bam bam (what T calls you).
Love you.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween From Us to You...Sorry it's almost mid november (better late than never)

Thy Children will swell the cry

Weekend after weekend, during football season, I would go to K-State football games. Going to games started first with my parents and then as a college student. Weekend after weekend I would sign the K-State alma mater:

I know a spot that I love full well,
‘Tis not in forest nor yet in dell;
Ever it holds me with magic spell,
I think of thee, Alma Mater.
K-S-U, we’ll carry thy banner high.
K-S-U, long, long may thy colors fly.
Loyal to thee, thy children will swell the cry.
Hail, hail, hail, Alma Mater

I've always loved singing it because I love football, I love pregame, and I love the cats. Cheesey I know!A few weekends ago Matt and I took Titus to his first EVER K-State game! I'm not going to lie I got a little emotional when we sang the alma mater and Matt and I looked at each other on the part "Loyal to thee, thy children will swell the cry". The emotional moment was less about forcing my children to love K-State football (though I will do that), it was more about getting the chance to share something that is special to us with our son. I totally get now why my family is 4 generations of K-Staters, why they brainwash us all to go to school there, and why Manhattan is such a special place.

Ultimately, First and FOREMOST, I want my children to follow Jesus passionately, but if they love K-State as well...that's great with me.
Here are the highlights of the weekend. I took these with  my phone so they are not the best pictures but at least you get some shots of Titus and Bram.
Titus watching the homecoming parade with Gigi. His first parade. He wasn't quite sure what to think with lots of 18-20 somethings yelling weird greek names at him and throwing candy.

On the left is T enjoying his first tailgate K-State style (loud music, good Kansas Beef, and lots of sweet treats), and on the right is my sister and I cuddling up with Bram pre-game style.

In awe

A little post victory dinner!

Happy Birthday Papa Mike

Last weekend our new little family of four loaded up and headed south...just to Wichita, but it was our first road trip as a family of four!

The boys were both asleep as soon as we hit the road! Praise the Lord. Of course on a 3 hour rode trip with a chubby hungry baby we had to stop at the 1.5 hour mark. If you are on road trip in the Midwest where else would stop but Braum's!

We tried to take a family picture while we were at Braum's and this is what we got! It pretty much describes our stop at Braum's. Crazy. But delicious. Who can resist a good burger with fries and maybe we got ice cream as well...maybe.

Papa had this delightful "toy" ready for the boys when we got there. Titus had an awesome time bouncing around with his cousin Ryder. Matt might have had even more fun then the kids did in this thing. He threw the boys all over the place in there. As you can tell Papa Mike spent some time in the bounce house as well.

One night we got dressed up in "handsome" clothes and went to a childhood favorite restaurant of Matt's, called Defazzio's. The Handsome little man and I had a hard time getting a good picture in the car, but you can sort of see a close up of his comb-over in the pic of us together . Matt and I secretly love him with a comb-over. A comb-over was how Matt liked his hair as kid. :) It's true.

And finally...Matt and the other big boys (uncle Jake, uncle Jimmy, and papa Mike) spent some time in the cage. If I say so myself, Matt has still got it. :)

Aunt Hollie and I got some much needed time with our sweet niece Briar. Isn't she precious.

Until the next road trip....

Bram,
You are a sweet boy. It's so fun to smile at you and see you smile back. You're growing so fast! I can't believe it was only 2 1/2 months ago that you were in the NICU. You have changed so much! Your big brother loves hugging, kissing, and squeezing you. Lately he's been trying to lick your head. We've been explaining to him that licking isn't the best way to express his love for you! :) Titus loves to tell everyone, "MY new baby brother". He's very proud of you and so are mommy and daddy.
Love you.

Some pictures of you from the last month

heart melted

My big boy, Titus, started Mother's Day Out this week. I know it's only one day a week for 5 hours, but when you've spent almost every day together for his entire TWO YEARS of life that seems like a long time! It was a long time. I missed him a ton...and Bram and I got a ton done around the house. What I got done around the house is not the point. The point is that my baby is not a baby any more. He goes to school now.

Last week we to the church where he goes to MDO for about an hour so that he could meet his new teachers and get familiar with his new classroom. Titus enjoyed it but seemed hesitant. He's a people person, like his mama, so I knew once school actually started that little extrovert would LOVE it!
And he did love it! The note his teacher sent home said that he had a GREAT day! The picture up above is of him the morning before he left for his first day! I'm sure we will take many more "first day of school" pictures on this porch. :)
When I came to pick him up he gave me the painting he made for me. It melted my heart. My baby is a big boy now...

and maybe a future artist.

A week in the life...

A week in the life of T and B...

August 26th- September 1

Thanks to a gift from Grandma Gigi, Titus got to try water color painting for the first time. He didn't really understand the concept, but he loved the mess! He got paint all over his shirt and hands.

One day we took the whole day to just relax around the house...we rarely do that! I was reminded how fun it is to have a day to not worry about being anywhere and just focus on hanging with my boys. I learn so much about them when we slow down and get some QT! My favorite part of that day was playing cars and dinosaurs with T man. He has really become a little boy! He races his cars and sets up the dinosaurs to watch the show. It's adorable.

On Thursday we were REALLY excited for the weekend to start (Matt works Sunday-Thursday), so Titus helped me bake some cookies to try to allure Matt to come home a little early! It didn't work, but he did enjoy the cookies when he got home.

OH and this handsome man turned 8 weeks on Tuesday of this week. He's a pretty special boy. He spends most the day eating...if you can't tell.

Mercy Project

Hopefully some of you can take the time to learn a little more about the Mercy Project Today! Watch a video or check out a link.

There’s an estimated 7,000 children who work in the Ghana fishing industry. Some of
these children are as young as 5 and 6 years old.  All of these children are slaves.
–Mercy Project

Today many in our country will take a day off from our jobs to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers.  No matter if we’re celebrating at home or at the beach, we’re entering into a tradition that has largely been shaped by Labor Unions - organizations that are dedicated to protecting workers’ interests and improving their wages, hours, and working conditions.  Today as we lounge around or hang out with friends and family, we’re not only celebrating hard work, we’re honoring fair, ethical working practices and the laws that prevent discrimination, abuse, and child labor in our country.  Without these laws in place (and enforced), the most vulnerable members of society suffer.  Who are the most vulnerable? Children.

Today as we’re celebrating the systems in our own country that strive to prevent injustices like child trafficking and child labor, we’re mindful of the many child slaves around the world who are unprotected and the organizations, like Mercy Project, who are working to free them.

As a mother, it’s difficult for me to imagine my children working 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I’m unable to wrap my brain around the thought of my children engaged in long, hard days of physical labor, eating one meal a day, and then falling asleep at night on a dirt floor filled with other slave children.  Yet this is the daily reality for kids who have been trafficked into the fishing industry in Ghana, Africa.  As with much of Africa, there is a great deal of poverty in Ghana. Unfortunately, this leaves many mothers in an unimaginable position: sell their children to someone who can take better care of them or watch them starve to death. Most of the mothers are told their children will be given food, housing, and an education. Instead, the kids are often taken to Lake Volta where they become child slaves and their mothers never see them again.  Thankfully, Mercy Project is working to break the cycles of trafficking around Lake Volta by providing alternate, more efficient, sustainable, fishing methods for villagers – ultimately eliminating the need for child slaves.  Because of the work Mercy Project is doing in Ghana, the first group of children will be freed this month from Lake Volta.
VIDEO

We invite you to watch this moving, 10 minute documentary about the issues surrounding child labor and trafficking in Ghana and most importantly the hope Mercy Project is bringing to children and entire communities in Africa.  Mercy Project is the only NGO working on Lake Volta addressing the injustice of child labor and child trafficking at its root - by strengthening the Ghanaian economy and eliminating the structures that cause the demand for trafficked children.
Whether these ideas of child labor, child trafficking, and modern-day slavery are new to you or you’re aware of these injustices, but need to hear some good news every once in awhile, we invite you to become a part of what Mercy Project is doing in Ghana.  When Mercy Project frees their first group of children this month, we can all celebrate together.

Extra Information
In case you get asked questions or simply want this information for yourself –

Is Mercy Project a 501c3 non-profit organization?
Yes! We are recognized by the IRS as a non-profit organization, and all donations made to Mercy Project are tax-deductible as per allowed by the law. We send year end tax statements to each donor every January.

Is Mercy Project affiliated with a religious organization?
In short, no. But we were founded because we believe that this is the kind of thing that God wants his people to be doing. We are passionate about connecting people with this incredible chance to help the kingdom come here on earth as it is in heaven. That being said, we are proud of the fact that many, many of our supporters do not share our religious motivation but believe in us and our passion enough to want to be a part of it. That means a lot to us, and we work very hard to make sure anyone who wants to be involved can find a place.

A week in the life...revisted

August 12th-18th

There was a season that I was a rock star about putting up some highlights of our week on the blog. I thought this would be so fun to look back at and remember some of the ways we spent our time each week. Well...if you check my posts you can see I haven't done that in awhile, but here we go again. A week in the life of T and Bram revisted! :)

Here are some of the things we did this week:
played in the pool with friends
on a rainy day mommy taught me how to play on pbskids

A porch party up top and LOTS of walks! We used a gift from mawmaw & pawpaw to get this stroller! THANK YOU mawmaw & pawpaw!!

Embrace the Mess

God is working on my heart in a lot of areas right now, but there seems to be a specific focus on my desire to control. Control and not trust, control and not love, control and not "fill in the blank". If there is one thing that having a new baby will do to your world is make it spin out of control. I'm seeing that my desire to try to control (in the midst of spinning) is leading me to be super anal about things like how clean our house is, eating healthy, etc. Thankfully God in his grace is teaching me to trust him with those things and to not allow those things to keep me from engaging the IMPORTANT things, i.e. my two beautiful boys.

So to practically fight this desire to control (while God works on my heart), Titus and I decided to embrace the mess. I know to a lot of you this might not seem like a big deal, but when you are not sleeping much with a newborn and can barely find a moment to fold laundry the thought of a dirty kitchen is overwhelming! All the other moms just said amen! :) We embraced the mess and made cookies!

We didn't just bake cookies, we made a huge mess! Titus was my helper the whole time! You can imagine how that increased the mess. Titus even did some of his own cooking with cheerios! (He stirred and dumped cheerios everywhere while I read the ingredients and got everything out!)

At one point when I started feeling overwhelmed by the cheerios we were crunching into the floor, we decided to start chanting, "mess, mess, mess". It was fun!

here's our cookies in the making, recipe thanks to jami's blog

And where was Bram during this wild time...

Introducing Bram Mac Marasco

Surprise...My water broke
Our sweet little Bram was born on July 3rd 2012 at 2:48am. Bram's arrival caught us by surprise when I went to see our Midwife and found out that my water had a slow leak. This meant that Bram had to be induced that day. Matt and I left the doctor's office, dropped Titus of at a friend's house, went home to pack a bag, and were at the hospital within about an hour! We were nervous since I was only 35 weeks and 5 days pregnant, but we were also excited to meet our new little guy.

Whoa...Labor Time
They started the pitocin at around 1pm and labor was slow most of the day. Around 7pm the contractions started getting to the "oh my" point. Matt and I were trying to go through labor without an epidural, if possible. From 7pm to 10pm things went really well with labor. The contractions were painful but we were getting through them. Matt was a great support and we were enjoying working together to help me handle the pain. Around 10pm things got way more INTENSE. The pain was well....the wrath of God. Honest. But we tried to keep working through it. Around midnight I starting begging Matt to get our wonderful nurse and ask her to call in the epidural! (Side note: We couldn't have been more blessed to have a wonderful midwife and a great labor and delivery nurse. Rachel and Lindsay are both truly God sends. Rachel, has delivered both of our boys. Matt and I couldn't be more thankful for the way she was has walked with our family over the past 3 years (since I got pregnant with T)! She goes above and beyond in every way. She is so loving and helpful. Lindsay was such a great help through labor. She was so helpful in giving advice for handling the pain and so encouraging. We praise God that she was our nurse that night.)
I finally did get an epidural at 2am, right after I got it Lindsay checked and I was dilated 10 cm! No wonder the pain was so intense...I was in transition (a labor term that basically means the roughest part of  labor!) The epidural got me through the pushing part of labor

Just chilling waiting for the pain to kick in

Pain had finally kicked in, for some reason I'm excited about the pain at this point...means baby is coming soon...about an hour later I didn't look this happy about the pain!
Unexpected Route
Before I started pushing we learned that because our baby not quite 36 weeks they would have to have the NICU staff at the delivery just in case. We were all hopeful that baby boy would come and everything would be fine but they needed to be there as a precaution. There was the obvious risk that his lungs wouldn't be ready to breath without mama's help. So two pushes later, sweet Bram was out! (Though we hadn't named him yet!) There was also a chance they might have to transfer him to the NICU at Children's Mercy because the NICU at St. Luke's was full. As soon as we heard that we started asking some people to pray. When they put Bram on my chest it was obvious that he was struggling to breath on his own. After what seemed like seconds (was probably longer), the staff from the NICU took Bram off my chest and started the processing of admitting him into their care. Thanks to answered prayer Bram was able to be admitted to the NICU at St. Luke's and was not transferred. Matt went with Bram to help with that while Rachel and Lindsay stayed with me until I could go down and see Bram.

Not the best picture thanks to bili lights!  BUT one of the first pictures of Bram
 TO BE Continued...
More on our journey in the NICU later

(side note: I'm sharing all this a month later on here because I was convicted last night about how important it is for me to write our story (before I forget!!). I think it's important to keep track of the story of our family so that our boys can look back and read it some day and even share it with their kids.)
